Hot stone massage is one of our speciality massages. Using warm, smooth volcanic stones, made flat through the ocean or rivers. The stones are preheated basalt stones that and gently positioned along your spine. In the palms of each hand, along your legs, feet and between your toes. The hot Basalt stones that are used for massage have a rich iron mineral content that helps to retain heat. Occasionally ice cold marble stones are used if the aim of the treatment is to detoxing and healing. Hot stone massage has its roots in Chinese, Ayurvedic and Native American traditions and beliefs and believed to be over 2000 years old.

Warm, smooth volcanic stones

 This style of gentle massage involves using warm, smooth volcanic stones. Volcanic stones are heated in water until they have reached the correct temperature. The basalt stones are then placed onto specific energy points (chakras). An essential part of hot stone treatment is to harmonize your body, mind, and spirit. encouraging balance and meditative experience to comfort and ground you. Volcanic stones have been used for centuries by ancient traditions for their medicinal and spiritual powers. Hot stone aims to create balance and harmony on all levels. The heat from the volcanic stones has profoundly relaxing effects on the physical and spiritual aspects of the mind, body, and spirit.

What happens during the hot stone massage?

  • Our hot stone therapist will warm the stones in fresh water.  They are heated to a working temperature range of between 45 and 55 degrees centigrade.
  • We always keep in mind that some people are sensitive, they stones will be allowed to cool to suit before application. Always tell your therapist if the stones are too warm or the massage pressure is too firm. The hot stone massage begins with traditional Swedish style massage to loosen and bring blood to your muscles.
  • Next, the hot, flat basalt stones placed onto specific acupressure points along your body. The stones will warm and help to relax your muscles. This process gradually allows the therapist to apply progressively a deeper pressure during the hot stone massage.
  • The massage oil is mixed individually for you and your symptoms. The aromatherapy oil blends are worked into sore and stressed muscles using a combination of hot stones movements and flowing massage techniques.
  • Massage treatment involves your neck, shoulders, arms back and legs. Always try to allow plenty of time for your hot stone treatment.
  • Arrive 20 minutes early to allow yourself time to have a cup of tea and relax. 
  • If it is your first time at The Hatfield Practice, you’ll be asked to complete a pre-treatment form. The therapist will ask you questions relating to your general medical health. It is always best practice not to eat a large meal or drink alcohol beforehand

Is hot stone massage right for me?

If you think you may be pregnant, let your therapist know. Not advised if you have areas of decreased pain sensitivity, recent cuts or open wounds, areas of sore or inflamed skin, tumours, implants, current chemotherapy, radiation or some types of surgery. Advice must be sort from your specialist if you are on medication such as warfarin that thins the blood. If you have a serious medical condition, please let us know beforehand, and we will advise you accordingly.
