Osteopathy For Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a complicated and sensitive phase of a woman’s life. We provide safe and effective treatments that help prevent injury and reduce pain.

The Best Pregnancy Treatments

Expecting a new baby is a unique and very special experience. During pregnancy, enormous physical, hormonal and emotional changes occur quickly over a relatively short period. The female body has to adapt rapidly during this time, dealing with fluctuating hormonal changes affecting ligaments, postural problems and pelvic issues that may occur.

Hatfield Practice offers a wide range of pregnancy treatments, including Osteopathy and Physiotherapy, to help you stay fit, pain-free and well during pregnancy. During the consultation, a detailed case history will be taken, including any current symptoms, past medical history and obstetric history you may have. Treatment is different for every patient and complements your needs. Conditions often include low back pain, muscle aches and pelvic girdle pain; SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction) respond very well to Osteopathy. Pregnancy may wake up older injuries in the lower back area. Fast-changing physical loads may well cause muscles and joints to work harder.

Pregnancy has been described as a “complicated and sensitive phase of a woman’s life. Our experienced practitioners are trained to provide safe, gentle and effective treatments to help you and your body cope with pregnancy’s demands.

Pregnancy Osteopathy / Physiotherapy can help minimise stress and discomfort, leading to a more natural and easy pregnancy. They will discuss and review problems during the consultation and listen to your health concerns. The Osteopath will discuss and help you; they may choose the best course of treatment with your consent. Osteopaths are trained to identify many medical conditions clinically. They also provide safe and effective treatment to ease any pain or discomfort. Osteopaths use a wide variety and combinations of treatments. These may include massage, manipulation, exercises and stretches. If you would benefit from Acupuncture, they may suggest that too. Gentle and safe Osteopathy will help alleviate muscle and joint pain, helping your body to recover and work without pain or discomfort.

Pregnancy Treatments and Massage

Pregnancy treatments, including Physiotherapy or Osteopathy, are great during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Pregnancy Massage may also help to reduce pain, stimulate blood flow and improve lymphatics. Improving blood may also assist in the prevention of anaemia. Treatment during pregnancy may also increase muscle tone and improve flexibility, helping to alleviate leg cramps and potential muscle spasms.  Hatfield Practice pregnancy treatments and massage are performed by an Osteopath, Massage Therapist or Physiotherapist trained in prenatal massage.

Hatfield Practice understands the individual needs of each expectant mother and baby. While prenatal massage is suggested for nearly all mums, there are some special considerations for the safety and comfort of mother and baby. If you wish to learn more, call us for a friendly chat to learn more about appointments made in the first trimester. Any involved complications, such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, etc., will be considered.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Massage detects, treats and may prevent health problems during pregnancy by stretching and massaging muscles and joints.  As your body changes and your baby grows and develops, Massage can ease muscular discomforts, such as cramping, tightening, stiffness, tension and knots, which can all be successfully treated. Pregnancy Massage can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes. The Massage may also reduce other discomforts during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, oedema ( excess fluid in the legs), and sore, swollen ankles and feet.

Pregnancy Massage increases local and general blood circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to both the mother’s and fetus’s cells. The real benefit of looking after yourself may mean more energy, less fatigue for the mother, and better nourishment for her baby. Massage can help relieve symptoms of stress and alleviate nervous tension, allowing the mother to sleep deeply.

Taking time to feel better

During pregnancy, Osteopaths work with the bodies structures. The strain of ligaments and muscles usually causes pain. During pregnancy, the body produces a ligament softening hormone (relaxin). Relaxin enables the pelvic ligaments to become stretchy to accommodate your baby during delivery. Increased relaxin levels can cause muscles around the pelvis and joints to work harder and even go into a painful spasm.

Pregnancy treatment gently eases muscle spasms and tensions throughout the body, particularly the lower back. Having therapy during pregnancy may help boost the whole body, not just the injured area, leaving you feeling relaxed and in less pain. Some people have regular treatments during pregnancy, helping to keep themselves active yet comfortable. Giving your body some quality time to repair and recover from the stresses of pregnancy is essential. Taking time to have the treatment and de-stress can make a marked difference in how you feel.

Always brilliant treatment, whether I’ve needed a muscle massage to relieve tension, or Physiotherapy to relieve aches and pains. The team are so friendly and really know their stuff!

After my baby was born I was left with horrendous low back pain. I was finding it hard to pick the little one up and really just do normal things. I had Physio with Dora she stretched out my low back and taped me up I felt like new again. A few more visits and all the pain was gone. Can’t thank all the lovely people at the Hatfield Practice enough
